Very dangerous as gas is ejected into the engine compartment. As it says, I'm getting around 8-9 mpg around town. Immediately lost power and pulled onto the shoulder. Will sometimes get 11 empty. Spark plugs replaced at 100k miles per maintenance schedule. Dont have it anymore, but had a 2000 f250 5. I use this truck to tow a 7700 pound 30' camper with no problems i did add firestone airbags to smooth out the ride with trailer on. Didnt burn any oil, and had the original clutch 5spd. I am finally reporting it after I started to research and found out that this is a well known Ford defect that they will not admit to. Had a 8' plow for the last 3 winters I had it. Ford should be stron - up. After doing some searching on the net, I find that this is a very common problem with this model year. After internet research seams that this is a common problem with the Ford triton motor design. The fuel filter on the 99 is on the frame rail under the drivers seat.
GeorgeMy advice would be to just drive what you got into the ground. I came across a form website where it looks as though other people have had the same problem. Recently returning from an out of town trip one of the spark plugs blew out of the cylinder head while driving on the highway. It is easy to change, I just did mine in less than 5… on most Chevy trucks the fuel filter is located on the inside of the frame rail along the drivers side. Also, expect to get about a half pint or so of gas to escepe, be careful.
My 3 spark plug on the passenger side blew straight out of the head and destroyed the ignition coil pack. It has 95k miles on it and runs great. This problem has been well documented from dealership databases to internet forums; everyone in the know is aware of this issue. Has been known to start a fire. It looks a little hidden but it is… i believe it's in the fuel tank. The worst I can remember checking was just over 12, heavy for a 5. The truck has received proper maintenance.
This is a known issue with the Ford modular engines and causes damage to the interior of the engine compartment and components in the engine bay. I have a 2005 F250 5. The easiest way to replace it is to break the fuel line nut loose on the side nearest the wheel and screw it all the way off you may have a small amount of gasoline come out of the filter, so have a container handy. Ford needs to cowboy up with recall to fix the problem.
