Clint kills Pinchot first, and Jeff, alerted by the noise, spots Holman, who is leveling a rifle at Clint. He then begins to disarm everyone in the town. But then you have the businessman who want his help but fear his help will kill the town with their businesses ending up dead because of his violent ways. That night, Clint again visits Nelly, who, despite her bitterness about his work, cannot blame Clint for his attachment to gun law, as she knows that he was the young boy who saw his pacifist father murdered. Between 1950 and 1956 she played opposite some of the biggest stars in the business. As the couple quarrels, Nelly reveals that Beth died three years ago, during the first, difficult winter after they had left Clint.
. Instead, Tollinger arrests the two for carrying guns in town and exchanges them for Castle. Two men ride into town to tell Tollinger that they have detained Castle for trespassing and invite him to pick Castle up at Holman's ranch. This opening directed by Richard Wilson sets the tone for the ensuing hour and a half running time. A town that is besieged by an outlaw force who work for a local landowner intent on running the town and everyone in it. Nelly, who loved Clint deeply but left him because of his dangerous occupation, will not answer. Holman rides into town in a surrey to watch.
Holland that the town trembles about. The firing of the main saloon bordered on nasty, but it was an effective way to combat the spread of poison. Soon after, as Nelly is escorting one of her girls to the stagecoach, she learns that a traveling salesman who spoke earlier with Ann Wakefield, another of her dancers, is actually Zender, Holman's lawyer. Once secured in the role as the enforcer in town with no rules to bind him, Mitchum goes about killing two men in one of the local watering holes. Reedy an uncredited , their leader, takes off his hat and trades small talk with him, then reaches for a gun hidden in the hat, but Tollinger shoots him dead too.
Jealous of the growing attraction of Stella Atkins, Jeff's girlfriend, to Tollinger, Nelly finally tells him that Beth is dead. Clint informs Lescoe that from now on, there will be no wearing of weapons within town limits, and orders him to surrender his bowie knife. Knowing that he will be killed if he goes to the ranch, Clint instead arrests the two men for wearing guns. As usual the good business folk have mixed emotions - they want to get rid of the baddies but like the business they bring. Clint outdraws two of the men, after which the remaining two ride off.
Clint then visits Stella and Atkins to inquire about Jeff, and Stella asks him if the culprits would have shot Jeff if he had not fired at them earlier. It still applies: relax drink and gambling laws and encourage the industries but pretend to deplore the seedy effects it can have on ordinary people. Tollinger kills his would-be killer, but is shot in the shoulder by Holman. Meanwhile, Holman rides into town in a buggy, shadowed by Pinchot. Fortunately, no other structures are burned, although in the morning, many people are grumbling about Clint's seemingly erratic actions. He orders them to drop the guns in their hands, and they do so.
But it is a well crafted b Western, with an interestingly brooding storyline complemented by acting veering from the good to corny. The supporting cast includes and. He only wants to know how their daughter Beth is doing. Robert Mitchum slopes into wide open town looking for his wife and news of their daughter, and stays for a time as town-tamer. After leaving the Palace, Clint finds the Harkness brothers still in town and shoots them, much to everyone's astonishment.
The next day, Jeff leaves town to work on his land, and Clint tells an anxious Stella that Jeff is old enough to take care of himself. Nelly learns by chance that Zender is Holman's lawyer, so she tries to warn Tolliver. After Nelly refuses to talk with Clint, he returns to Atkins' livery stable. In town, Jeff complains to Marshal Lee Sims, but the ineffectual Sims retorts that Holman has too many gunmen to be defeated. Holman, who does not want farmers in the valley, sends his henchmen, led by Ed Pinchot, to intimidate Jeff, but he scares them off by firing at them.
Meanwhile, in the valley, young farmer Jeff Castle is building a homestead on his legally acquired land. There are really no surprises to be found here in this western that was actually produced by Samuel Goldwyn Jr. He gets the drop on them with a shotgun. Stone Jr and , and directed by Wilson. Places like the local saloon fronted by Ted De Corsia sporting a French accent but owned behind the scenes by our mysterious Mr. Clint then goes to Virg Trotter's bar and orders Fred and Cy Harkness, two of Holman's gunmen, to leave town. At a social event, one of the town women advises Tollinger that his job will not be finished until the dance hall girls also leave town.
Sims tells him about Holman, an obese, wily man who has not left his ranch in several years, preferring to surround his stronghold with gunfighters. Mitchum and Sterling are well cast and the Wilson handles the set pieces fine and generally keeps it all moving sweetly. Then in an unseen confrontation, he kills a man. What we watch is how amazingly this calm man turns in to a violent beast with a dark side which would terrify many a man. When he puts down his shotgun, one reaches for his holstered pistol, only to discover that Tolliver is faster to the draw. Atkins, the president of Sheridan City's town council, considers hiring Clint, but Hughes urges caution, as Clint's methods can be extreme. That night, Clint goes to Nelly's office and asks about their daughter Beth, whom he has not seen since Nelly left him.
Tollinger begins by warning two known gunmen to leave town. Cinema icons including John Wayne, Alan Ladd, Kirk Douglas, Mitchum, Heston, Holden, Ford and Bogie. Trouble is are the town prepared for Clint's sort of cure? I don't remember ever seeing this one before tonight, probably the title sounded so ordinary it kept passing me by. Jeff stubbornly insists that he never asked for Clint's help, however, and Clint leaves. The council decides to meet that afternoon to settle the matter, and Atkins warns Clint that he will be fired.
